As a St John Ambulance Queensland community transport driver, Alith Jok is part of a service dedicated to improving the quality of life for its clients.
Originally starting as a community support worker, Alith transitioned to the driver role in 2022.
“I like meeting new people and seeing new places,” he said. “Getting to know clients is a real highlight of my role, you get to build trust with them and they come to rely on you. I feel proud knowing what we do makes a difference in their lives.”
St John Ambulance Queensland provides the pre-booked service for clients needing transportation to medical appointments, church, special events, shopping, social outings and more. All drivers undergo a Disability Worker Screening and National Criminal History Check and are trained in first aid.
Alith’s daily routine begins with a vehicle safety check, followed by a review of his roster.
“I collect the clients who have booked in for the day and make sure they get to where they need to be,” he said. “I really enjoy the accompanied trips, usually I take the clients to do their shopping or to medical appointments and help them by carrying the shopping bags or waiting with them before they go into their appointment to keep them company.
“Over time, they get to know you well and you build friendships. It takes time and patience to understand different perspectives but I enjoy seeing the change in them as they build their confidence.
“What we do really makes a positive impact in their lives and helps them to keep their independence as they’re getting older.”
Doreen Cavanaugh began using the service for medical appointments during her radiation treatments.
“The drivers looked after me so well and their kindness has meant a lot, so I wanted a way to keep my connection with St John Ambulance Queensland even after my treatment had ended,” Doreen said.
“I decided to sign up for the social trips, which have led to me meeting so many wonderful people and some really great friendships.
“The assisted shopping service is wonderful. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the staff and volunteers from St John Ambulance Queensland. I like sitting and having a coffee and a chat after shopping.
“Without the social trips, I wouldn’t get to go to a lot of the places that we visit. Being a part of the program has really opened new experiences for me.”
