Queensland Poisons Information Centre

Golden Jubilee Symposium

The Auditorium, Level 7, Queensland Children’s Hospital

South Brisbane

Thursday 22nd August 2024

8:30am to 4:00pm

The Poisons Information Centre was founded in 1974, and since that time, receives and gives skilled, professional advice to those who telephone with urgent need relating to all aspects of drug and poison exposures.

This unique service provides skilled urgent counsel to more than 35,000 callers each year. The service, based at the Queensland Children’s Hospital, is staffed by a small team of specialised pharmacists, trained in toxicology, supported by clinical toxicologists and other specialists.

First Aid plays a vital role in the support services delivered to anyone experiencing a poisoning or suspected poisoning emergency situation. St John Ambulance (Qld) supports the lifesaving service of the Queensland Poisons Information Centre by offering a range of in depth face-to-face and online courses covering First Aid for children, bites and stings and Asthma and Anaphylaxis.

St John Ambulance (Qld) stock First Aid kits specifically tailored to treating bites and stings along with all other First Aid scenarios likely to be encountered by children help to ensure our community is prepared in any emergency situation.

The Symposium will take the form of a series of short papers presented by experts in this field. These will include topics relating to urgent calls by parents concerned about child ingestions; bites and stings; plant ingestions; deliberate self-harm attempts; and advice to clinicians and other health professionals.

The Symposium is free and will include lunch and refreshments.  The presentations will also be streamed on-line for those unable to attend in person.

Registrations close at 5pm 12th August 2024.
