The St John Eye Van has delivered its very first eye clinic in Woorabinda as part of a local community partnership with Yoonthalla Community Service.
Diabetes prevalence is nearly three times higher among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, with only 53% receiving annual eye screenings.
The St John Eye Van seeks to reduce blindness and visual impairment among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with diabetes by providing essential eye care services.
“We are thrilled to bring the Eye Van to Woorabinda and to work alongside Yoonthalla Community Services,” said Grace Mullins, General Manager Health Services.
“This clinic is more than just about delivering eye care—it’s about empowering the community to take charge of their health.”
The St John Eye Van’s mission aligns with national efforts to close the gap in healthcare access for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, ensuring that diabetes-related eye conditions are identified and treated early.
The partnership between the St John Eye Van and Yoonthalla Community Service reflects a shared commitment to improving health outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for individuals in the region.
“Our goal is to form long-term relationships with the people of Woorabinda so that we can give them the best eye care possible”, said Dr Andrew Laming, Ophthalmologist.
“This initiative relies on key partners who make the Eye Van’s work possible,” Said Dr Laming. “UD Trucks provides the prime mover for long-distance travel, while Followmont Transport supports its mobility through servicing and storage. Brands Ophthalmic Programs (BOP) generously supplies sight-saving injections at no cost to patients and CheckUp Together also plays a vital role in delivering healthcare to regional communities.”
Following the first clinic, the St John Eye Van will continue to serve the Woorabinda community with additional clinics scheduled for July 10 and September 4. These ongoing services will help ensure that residents have regular access to eye care, promoting better health and well-being.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to receive eye examinations and consultations. The clinics will be staffed by qualified professionals who are committed to delivering high-quality care in a welcoming environment.
