St John Queensland Launches Youth Program to Empower Future Health Leaders.

News from St John - 18 Feb 2025

During the COVID-19 pandemic, large groups of young Australians spent what would typically be their formative years for social development in isolated lockdown.

In the years after the pandemic studies conducted by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare have shown that the social and economic impacts on young people have been substantial.

Compared with older age groups, young people have experienced high rates of psychological distress, loneliness, and educational disruption.

In response to these challenges, St John Queensland is set to launch its Youth Program on February 18 in the Brisbane and Townsville regions. The program will run weekly on during school terms 1, 2, 3, and 4.

The program is designed to engage young people aged 12 to 17 in a dynamic initiative that focuses on fostering leadership development by teaching essential first aid skills and encouraging meaningful community service.

“Our Youth Program aims to empower young people with practical skills and leadership opportunities while encouraging community engagement,” said Grace Mullins, General Manager of Health Services.

“This program is designed to inspire confidence and create lasting friendships, providing a fun and supportive environment for participants.”

“Our goal is for participants to leave the program equipped with essential life-saving skills, a stronger sense of leadership, and a commitment to community service.”

The St John Queensland Youth Program is a pathway initiative aimed at building the confidence of young people who are interested in a career in health.

The skills learned as part of the program will assist participants in pursuing further education and employment opportunities, ultimately helping to build the next generation of healthcare providers to alleviate pressure on the healthcare system.

“This initiative not only prepares young individuals for real-life situations but also serves as a pathway for participants to put the skills they learn to use by volunteering as part of the Emergency Health Services (EHS). By participating in this program, young people will gain invaluable experiences that will benefit them throughout their lives,” Ms Mullins added.

Key outcomes of the program include:

– Learning essential first aid skills through a practical hands-on delivery model.

– Opportunities for leadership development and community service.

– Fostering confidence, resilience, and lifelong friendships for young people.

Registrations are now open for schools or parents with children who are interested in taking part.
